On a warm summer night, the Milky Way rose over the Valley of Fire in southern Nevada. Not far from Las Vegas, the public recreation state park holds a popular attraction and cool rock formation named "Elephant Rock.”
For this shot, I drove to Valley of Fire around midnight and hiked for about 20 minutes in the dark hoping to find the right place. With camera gear and tripod in tow, I set up in front of the rock formation. The Milky Way was starting to appear, so I waited a little longer until it was visible just above the elephant.
