Beat recently by our image of NGC 2264, this image is our second-longest integration time at 61 hours. We present the Seagull Nebula and Thor's Helmet Nebula in one mighty image!
This image was very challenging to achieve as the targets were only in the sky for 5 hours each night. It would only be high enough to capture starting at about 8 pm and would be hidden by trees by 1 AM. The time constraint alone was enough to make the gods mad, and certainly, us mere mortals.
After 12 nights and long grueling hours of stacking and processing - this is the result!
We were pleased to have the massive and magnificent crescent shape of the Seagull Nebula on the left in complementary colors of orange and blue. In contrast to the significantly smaller Thor's Helmet Nebula on the bottom right, it creates a scene of battle between a celestial seagull and the all-mighty god of thunder.
